We would like to commend The Mining Journal for their recent editorial concerning MAISD building plans.
Two years ago we were in attendance at the MAISD meeting when the public vocally expressed their disapproval of MAISD plans for a very expensive lakeshore building site and new building. The public pointed out there were several buildings already available for consideration. MAISD agreed at that time to go back to the drawing board and look at less expensive options. Now, we are presented with a newly purchased building site and practically no opportunity for taxpayers to comment. Perhaps MAISD administration forgot the publics' questioning the need for building a new facility.
MAISD continues to grow despite documented declining enrollment, the closing of an elementary school, and discussions of closing other schools. With fewer students to support now and in the future, where is the justification for building and expanding?
After the recent defeat of the MAISD millage request, MAISD officials stated the public did not care about the students. Rather, by defeating the millage we believe the public was saying no to more growth and yes to fiscal responsibility. This is just another instance of bureaucracy thumbing their noses at the public.
Sincerely yours,
